The Young Daniels succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to a solid Lutterworth Athletic side at the Zeeco Stadium in the FA Youth Cup in the first qualifying round on Monday night (20th September).
Having come through the preliminary round stage in ruthless fashion against Ilkeston Town, winning 6-1 at the New Manor Ground, Guy Walton and Nathan Foster’s side were blunted this time around. Both of the visitor’s goals came in the second half through Shea Cave (62 minutes) and Billy Bowes (83 minutes).
Stamford was the happier of the two sides to go in at the break goalless, with Lutterworth having had the better of play in a competitive half which yielded few chances.
The home side did end the opening 45 minutes well and came back out in the second half looking strong as they managed to push Lutterworth back.
The best moment of the game for the Young Daniels came on 56 minutes as Taylor Gilbert forced a good save from the Lutterworth goalkeeper with a fierce strike on the edge of the box.
With Stamford on the front foot, it looked as though it would be only a matter of time until the home side opened the scoring, but the deadlock was broken shortly after Cave took hold of the ball on the left-wing. A powerful run into the box opened space for the Lutterworth man to finish well past Young Daniels goalkeeper Oliver Bramley.
Stamford was unable to test the visitor’s goalkeeper, mostly because of a well-organised Lutterworth defence, and the visitor’s put the game beyond any doubt in the last 10 minutes.
The Young Daniels, unable to clear their lines from a Lutterworth corner, conceded after the ball was played low back into the box from the right-hand side. Bowes, able to control the cross, unleashed a shot beating Bramley and into the Stamford goal for a 2-0 lead.
Lutterworth was full value for their win at the Zeeco Stadium and now go on to play Anstey Nomads in the second qualifying round of the FA Youth Cup.
The Young Daniels, though defeated, can certainly take the positives from this season’s run in the FA Youth Cup as they look ahead to the rest of the season.
