The Young Daniels secured progression in the FA Youth Cup with a convincing 6-1 victory away at Ilkeston Town in the preliminary round.
It was an inexperienced Stamford side that made the trip to the New Manor Ground but you wouldn’t know it from looking. Goals from Tyrell Smith (two), Joe Manning (three) and Harvey Smith were enough to see of the challenge of the hosts.
Stamford controlled the first-half but it was Young Daniels’ goalkeeper Oliver Bramley who made the first save of note with the scores level, coming off his line to deny the Ilkeston striker who was through on goal after 23 minutes.
Eventually, Stamford’s dominance was rewarded in the 43rd minute as Tyrell Smith opened the scoring from close-range before Manning bagged his first of the night on the stroke of half-time as the Young Daniels went in at the break 2-0 up.
A third for Stamford and a second for Smith came soon after the restart as Tyrell Smith took advantage on a mix-up in the Ilkeston defence.
The floodgates soon opened as Harvey Smith was fortunate to see the ball rebound off him and into the far corner of the Ilkeston goal on the 57th minute, while Manning helped himself to a hat-trick with goals in the 70th and 88th minutes of the game to complete a near-perfect performance.
Ilkeston had threatened to come back into the game as they pulled one back through Chris Okoye, who rounded Bramley before slotting home to reduce the host’s deficit to two.
A crowd of 128 were in attendance at the New Manor Ground for this Tuesday night fixture as the Young Daniels go marching on in the FA Youth Cup, setting up a home tie against Lutterworth Athletic with the tie to be played week commencing Monday 13th September.
Manager Guy Walton was full of praise for his side, saying: “We have taken a young side and worked hard for our splendid win.
“Our discipline and team work-rate out of possession of the ball was relentless and in possession creative, with our impressive strikers taking their chances for such a great result.”
